The Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS) has intensified efforts to promote road safety awareness among school-going children across Uganda following growing concern over fatalities linked to road accidents.
The campaign is aimed at instilling responsible road behaviour at an early age, with authorities noting that many children continue to lose their lives due to reckless driving.
ITMS has adopted a proactive approach by engaging directly with schools and equipping pupils with essential knowledge and practical skills to help them stay safe while commuting.
According to traffic reports, at least two school-going children lose their lives daily due to road accidents.
Through this initiative, ITMS hopes to reverse this trend by nurturing a generation that is informed, alert and safety-conscious on the roads.
The awareness drive focuses on practical training such as proper use of zebra crossings, safe road-crossing techniques, understanding which side of the road to walk on, and general awareness of road signs and traffic behaviour.
So far, the campaign has reached more than 3,000 pupils in about 12 schools across the country, including in Mbale, Fort Portal, and now Kampala.
The current focus on Kampala targets schools in densely populated and high-risk areas where children are more exposed to heavy traffic and reckless motorists.
ITMS emphasises that road safety is a shared responsibility and says it is investing in community-based awareness campaigns to empower young learners with life-saving knowledge as part of efforts to promote safer roads nationwide.
By equipping children with the right skills and awareness, the organisation believes it is contributing to building a safer and more responsible society for the future.
